Policy: Affordable Housing Bonds (BAHFA)

The Bay Area Housing Finance Authority (BAHFA) is a new regional authority created to address the Bay Area’s chronic housing challenges. BAHFA has been given the authority to issue bonds to raise funds to be used for the production, protection and preservation of affordable housing.

Bay Area Housing for All (BAHA) is a Bay Area wide coalition working to support the campaign for a nine-county general obligation bond through BAHFA to raise $10- $20 Billion for affordable housing. This funding is badly needed. Affordable housing is woefully underfunded and needlessly complicated. For more information, see our primer on affordable housing.

MEHC is part of this coalition working to educate the public on these general obligation bonds on the November 2024 ballot. Along with the bond measure, we are also working towards an amendment to the state constitution to allow bonds for affordable housing to pass with less than a 2/3 vote, which is currently required. You can learn more about the bonds with this one pager.

We encourage all MEHC supporters to endorse the Affordable Housing Bonds now. You can endorse at Bay Area Housing for All (BAHA).
