Fostering Community Resilience, Now More Than Ever

MEHC’s partner organization, the Multicultural Center of Marin, led by MEHC Board member Douglas Mundo, has been re-funded to continue its Canal Community Resilience Council (CCRC) project for another year, through mid-2021. MEHC is pleased to be able to continue to provide technical support on this project.

The CCRC is intended to build community resilience and leadership in the face of the threats of climate change, sea level rise, and gentrification in the Canal neighborhood. The project got off to a promising start in 2019-2020 with several well-attended community meetings, only to be paused in March of 2020 by the COVID-19 pandemic. Efforts shifted to helping with the relief efforts in a community suddenly facing massive unemployment and challenges with home-schooling during the shelter-in-place order.

The CCRC will resume meeting virtually in August 2020 with a session on reducing waste and, consequently, reducing greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) as well as negative health and environmental impacts. This year the Council will also be looking at a number of planning initiatives that will impact the Canal neighborhood, and helping to educate and create capacity within the community in order to have a voice in those efforts.
