Eviction Moratorium Reinstituted at County

The countywide moratorium on pandemic-related evictions expired in September, having been replaced by a statewide moratorium that provides relief through January 31, 2021 for tenants who submit a declaration form and pay at least 25% of their September–January rent. On January 12th, the Marin County Board of Supervisors re-instituted its local moratorium, which will remain effective through June 30, 2021.

MEHC fully supports this move on the part of the County. However, we remain concerned about tenants who face rent increases during this time, which may serve as a form of “economic” eviction. While the County and some towns (Corte Madera and Fairfax) are providing rental assistance to tenants struggling with pandemic-related income loss, rent increases will consume these assistance funds much faster.

While Governor Newsom is also calling for an extension of the statewide eviction moratorium and the distribution of $2.6 billion in federal rental relief, his 2021-22 State Budget proposal has not yet been passed.
