West Marin Report: 1,000 New Homes Needed
We are experiencing a housing crisis in Marin County. West Marin faces unique obstacles. MCF funded a community research study to learn more about the living conditions and needs for residents and workers in West Marin. The West Marin Housing Solutions report was thorough, and one finding stood out: West Marin needs at least 1,000 affordable homes developed.
1,000 may seem like a big number, but it is a conservative estimate of the housing needed. Over 2,000 people commute into West Marin for work. Workers living on ranches are experiencing horrific living standards.
There are only 481 sites identified by the Marin County Housing Element for West Marin. We cannot rely on housing element programs to meet this need. We must do more.
The The report outlines several recommendations, including:
1) Implement tenant protections, to ensure safer living conditions for current residents
2) Adopt septic reform
3) Expand housing on all sites (ranches, private and public land, schools, etc.)
We urge you to advocate for more housing in West Marin, and read the report.
