Support Victory Village now

The Town of Fairfax is considering a new strategy for getting to “yes” on Victory Village, a 54-unit affordable housing project for seniors. A staff report on the March 1 Town Council agenda asks whether the Council wants to consider creating a new senior housing zone at the same time as considering the Victory Village application. MEHC strongly backs Victory Village, and we support the Town Council’s continuing commitment to this vital project.

The Council was originally scheduled to hold a hearing on the “streamlining” amendment to the Planned Development District in the zoning ordinance. The “streamlining” amendment, which is outlined in the Town’s Housing Element, would simplify the process for reviewing and approving Victory Village. But, it’s also an easy target for fear mongering and misinformation, if your agenda is to block Victory Village. The proposal to create a senior housing zone and simultaneously consider the Victory Village application may be a way to avoid the misperceptions created by the streamlining proposal.

MEHC says, Victory Village needs your support now, more than ever. Consider attending the Town Council meeting Wednesday evening (7:00 PM at the Fairfax Women’s Club, 46 Park Road) and/or send a supporting email to the Town Council at this address: mgardner@townoffairfax.org.

Here are some talking points that support Victory Village:

  • Victory Village is environmentally responsible. It is an infill project that will not disturb any green space. These small apartments will be resource-efficient.
  • There is a desperate need for affordable senior housing in Marin.
  • We want the Town Council to enable Victory Village to be considered by whatever means it deems best – PDD or the new approach – as soon as possible.
  • Victory Village is a beautifully designed project that would house 54 senior households. If we don’t take this opportunity, the property could be developed into something with a much greater impact on the community, and much less community benefit.
  • The property will be developed; which route does Fairfax want to take? Affordable homes for seniors is the lowest impact plan for this site.
  • We support whatever it takes to make the project happen on a timely basis.
