Our Mission

MEHC builds public support for projects and policies that create and sustain affordable housing, through an environmental integrity and social justice lens.

The Marin Environmental Housing Collaborative (affectionately referred to as MEHC) is a non-profit organization in Marin that advocates for affordable, environmentally sustainable housing. 

MEHC began by bringing together leaders in the environmental and affordable housing communities into an active, committed, task-oriented group. MEHC has provided critical support for many projects that provide affordable housing including Vivalon in San Rafael, 1 Hamilton in Mill Valley, 1251 South Elisio in Larkspur, and many more. MEHC supports policies that will support and sustain affordable housing, including changes to zoning codes, parking requirements, affordable housing financing and tenant protections. MEHC is part of a coalition of non-profit and housing organizations that support the Affordable Housing Bonds that will be on the November 2024 ballot. We track the agendas of the Marin local governments to identify when important housing issues are raised, and encourage residents to speak up for housing. When especially critical issues arise, we will provide suggested talking points. To track local meetings, you can sign up for our weekly Coming Up newsletter.

We also work hard to create the political will to build housing in Marin. MEHC makes connections between different interest groups, aligns the goals of competing missions, and provides stronger support for elected officials who want to vote for affordable housing but hesitate in fear of backlash. MEHC demonstrates that leaders in the environmental and affordable housing communities share vision and values and can collaborate to bring more environmentally friendly housing to Marin.

We provide education on housing issues through our monthly newsletter, Perspective, and by meeting with groups throughout the community.
