Call to Action: Accessory Dwelling Units and Junior Second Units

MEHC May 2018 Call to Action for support for ADUs and JADUs

Marin Environmental Housing Collaborative invites you to advocate for support of and funding for Accessory Dwelling Units and Junior Accessory Dwelling Units in your home town in 2018-19.

For many Marinites, the “golden years” are not looking so bright. According to a new report from the Marin Commission on Aging, Marin already has thousands more “rent-burdened” older adult households than it has affordable units for older and disabled adults—and by 2030, the needing affordable units will grow six times faster than the number of planned units. Something’s got to give!

One potential solution to this senior housing crisis: junior second units. Marin has a lot of extra bedrooms in older adult homes—a potential source of rental income that could allow older adult homeowners to age in place while providing a home for another senior household, a caregiver, family member, or other renter. Marin has 23,668 older adult households that could have a junior second unit–there could be nearly 16,000 more by 2030! While Marin jurisdictions have approved fewer than 200 such units to date, the potential is huge if even a fraction of these homes were to add a JADU.

How You Can Help

Join Marin Environmental Housing Collaborative and the Aging Action Initiative in advocating for support and funding for Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) and Junior Accessory Dwelling Units (JADUs) in your town or city’s 2018-19 budget. But hurry—time is running out!

City and Town Councils are currently planning their budgets for 2018-19. May and June is the time to ask local elected leader to include dedicated staff, funding and/or other resources to encourage more ADUs and JADUs in their communities.

Marin Environmental Housing Collaborative and the Aging Action Initiative invite advocates to speak during Public Comment time on “Items Not on the Agenda”.  This document can help you make your case.
